To find how many pavers you need, divide the project area in square feet by the area of one paver in square feet, then add a waste factor for cuts and breakage. A 4 in × 8 in paver covers 32 sq in, and 144 sq in make one square foot, so you get 144 ÷ 32 = 4.5 pavers per square foot. Everything else — base gravel, bedding sand, artificial turf — is the same idea: area times a depth or a coverage rate, converted into the unit the supplier sells in.
Below is the whole calculation, each step checked, using one worked patio so the numbers carry through.
Start with the area
Every paver, base and turf estimate begins with square footage. For a rectangle, that's just length × width. Our example patio is 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft.
For an L-shape or a path, break it into rectangles, work out each one, and add them. For a circle, area is π × radius² (a 10 ft-wide circular patio has a 5 ft radius, so 3.14159 × 5² = 78.5 sq ft). If your plan is drawn in metres, convert first — 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m and our 120 sq ft is about 11.15 sq m. Check: your area is in square feet (or square metres), never mixed — a length in feet times a width in inches is the most common estimating error.
How many pavers do you need?
Divide the area by the coverage of a single paver. Rather than redo the geometry each time, use pavers-per-square-foot:

For our 120 sq ft patio in 4 in × 8 in pavers: 120 × 4.5 = 540 pavers.
Now the waste factor. Cutting pavers to fit edges and curves means offcuts you can't reuse, plus the occasional cracked one. A common allowance is 5% for a straight rectangular layout, 10% for diagonal or curved work. At 10%, 540 × 1.10 = 594, which you'd round up to a clean 600 pavers.
Check: multiply back. 600 pavers × 32 sq in = 19,200 sq in ÷ 144 = 133 sq ft of paver for a 120 sq ft patio — about 11% over, which is the waste you asked for. If the answer covers less than your area, something is wrong.
How much base and bedding sand?
Under the pavers go two layers, and both are volumes: area × depth. Suppliers sell aggregate by the cubic yard, and 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet (exact), so the job is to reach cubic feet and divide by 27.
Base gravel. A patio typically wants about 4 in of compacted road base (driveways need much more — often 8 to 12 in). Convert the depth to feet: 4 in = 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft. Volume = 120 sq ft × 0.333 ft = 40 cu ft, and 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cubic yards. Gravel loses volume as it's compacted, so add roughly 15–20% and order about 1.75 cubic yards.
Bedding sand. A 1 in setting layer: 120 × (1 ÷ 12) = 10 cu ft, or 10 ÷ 27 = 0.37 cubic yards — call it half a yard. If your yard sells sand by weight, dry sand runs about 100 lb per cubic foot (a rule of thumb, not an exact constant — it varies with moisture), so 10 cu ft is roughly 1,000 lb, or half a ton.
Check: depth drives the volume. Doubling the base to 8 in doubles the gravel to about 3 cubic yards — if your number didn't move when the depth did, you divided by the wrong figure.
Joint sand, brushed into the gaps between pavers once they're laid, is sold by coverage on the bag and depends on paver thickness and joint width, so read the bag rather than guessing.
How much artificial turf?
Turf is calculated by area too, but with one twist: it comes in rolls of a fixed width — commonly 15 ft — and the pile (the "grain") has a direction, so every piece must run the same way. That means you buy the full roll width even if your space is narrower.
Say a lawn is 20 ft × 15 ft = 300 sq ft. A 15 ft roll cut to 20 ft covers it almost exactly. But a 20 ft × 12 ft = 240 sq ft lawn still needs a 15 ft-wide roll cut to 20 ft — that's 300 sq ft ordered to cover 240, with 60 sq ft of unavoidable waste from the roll width. Add 5–10% on top for seams and trim. Infill (silica sand brushed in to weight the turf and lift the blades) typically runs around 1–2 lb per square foot depending on pile height.
Check: lay out your roll widths on the plan on paper first. Turf waste comes from roll geometry, not from your multiplication — the arithmetic is the easy part.
Where the estimate meets the ground
The math above gives you an honest materials list, and for a small, flat, rectangular patio it's most of the job. Where it stops being pure arithmetic is the ground itself: base depth depends on your soil and drainage, and much of the Bay Area sits on expansive clay that swells and shrinks with the seasons, which can heave a shallow base. Slope, compaction in lifts, and edge restraint are what keep pavers from shifting a year later.
