"Will a bocce court fit?" is a measurement question, and it is one people usually get wrong in the same way: they compare the court dimension to the yard dimension and stop there. The court is not the thing you need to fit. The court plus the space to use it is.
This matters especially in Dublin, where a lot of the housing stock is newer construction on compact, graded lots. The yards are regular and flat, which is helpful, but they are not large.
The numbers, in both systems
A standard bocce court is about 60 to 90 feet long and 8 to 13 feet wide. Converted:

Courts do get built across that whole custom range, so "regulation or nothing" is a false choice. A 30-foot court is a real court.
The conversion to remember: 1 foot = 0.3048 metres, so multiply feet by 0.3048 for metres, and divide metres by 0.3048 to go back. For quick mental work, a foot is a bit under a third of a metre - so 90 ft is a bit under 30 m.
Add the clearance before you decide
This is the step people skip. Around the playing surface you need:
- Throwing space at each end - somewhere to stand and deliver without your heel on a flowerbed. Allow around 3 to 4 ft (0.9 - 1.2 m) at minimum, at each end.
- A walking side - you retrieve balls and walk the court between ends. Allow around 2 to 3 ft (0.6 - 0.9 m) on at least one long side.
- Somewhere to sit, if you want people watching rather than standing in the way.
So a 40 ft x 10 ft court is really asking for something closer to 48 ft x 14 ft of committed yard once you add ends and one side. Work in the clearance first and you will not be disappointed later.
A worked example
Say your usable back yard measures 52 ft x 22 ft (15.8 m x 6.7 m), and you want to keep a 12 ft deep patio against the house.
- Remove the patio: 52 - 12 = 40 ft of depth left, still 22 ft wide.
- Decide the court runs along the 40 ft dimension.
- Subtract end clearance: 40 - (2 x 3.5 ft) = 33 ft of court length available.
- Subtract side clearance from the width: 22 - 3 ft walking side = 19 ft, comfortably more than any court width needs, so width is not your constraint.
- Round down for a margin: build a 32 ft x 10 ft court.
That is a genuine, playable court in a yard most people would have assumed was too small - and the answer came out of subtraction, not aspiration.
Rounding: which way, and why
Always round the court down, never the clearance. If your arithmetic leaves you 33.5 ft, build 32 or 33, not 34. Two reasons:
- Real yards are not perfect rectangles. Fence lines wander, and the number you measured at one end is rarely the number at the other. Measure both ends and use the smaller.
- Border boards have thickness. The court's outside dimension is bigger than its playing dimension by roughly twice the board thickness, and borders commonly sit around 4 to 12 inches (0.1 - 0.3 m) high with real width at the base.
The depth dimension people forget
Court sizing is not only horizontal. A court is excavated and built back up in layers, and on a Dublin lot that often means digging into a graded, engineered pad rather than native soil.
Typical figures: a sub-base somewhere in the 4 to 18 inch (0.1 - 0.46 m) range depending on the soil, then a 3 to 4 inch (75 - 100 mm) layer of 3/4 inch (19 mm) crushed drain rock and decomposed granite, compacted flat, then the playing surface with a fine 30 mesh sand dressing.
That vertical stack matters for two practical reasons: the spoil has to go somewhere (a 40 x 10 ft court cut 12 inches deep is roughly 400 cubic feet, about 15 cubic yards, of material out), and the finished court level has to tie in sensibly with your existing patio and drainage.
